Coming Attraction
Yahoo! Shopping's New, Improved Checkout

The Yahoo! Shopping checkout process is being remodeled. The redesign features an attractive new look and a more intuitive flow, presenting shoppers with a friendlier, easier checkout experience.

Highlights include:

  • Single "Checkout" button on the shopping cart page
  • Progress bar display throughout the checkout process
  • Order Review page for final purchase confirmation and printout
  • Improved Security Key process

Changes will be implemented in two phases. In September, customers arriving at your store via Yahoo! Shopping will see the redesigned checkout. Then, after testing and review are completed, we'll roll out the new process for all purchases in Yahoo! Stores. We welcome your feedback on every aspect of the checkout redesign during the Shopping-only test period in September.

When the final launch date approaches, we'll send you an email reminder. Please take some time now to review your checkout pages before changes take effect. We suggest you evaluate all custom checkout elements on your pages (images, text, custom fields) to ensure that they still work well. To help you integrate your pages with this new user interface, we've created a preview page with style guidelines.

Preview the new Yahoo! Shopping checkout and associated style guide.

Reduce Redundancy: Decrease Duplicated Design Decisions

This article encourages the virtue of simplicity in web page design. Repetitive links and redundant page elements are often the result of hasty design decisions, and they tend to confuse visitors to your site. "Users rarely understand duplicates as such, and often waste time repeating efforts or visiting the same page twice by mistake," according to Jakob Nielsen.

If you're in the business of creating web pages, sooner or later you'll probably hear about Jakob Nielsen. Nielsen is a pioneering usability advocate who was describing and defining intelligent web design long before most of us had even surfed the Web for the first time.

Visit useit.com, his web site, or subscribe to Alertbox, his insightful, bi-weekly column on usability issues. You may not always agree with what Nielsen says, but you're sure to learn something to help you design more effectively.
