THE WOODCRAFT SHOP

Woodcraft
In the late 19th century, Berea benefited from the natural timber resources of the Appalachians as a “college and lumber mill town”. Berea College Crafts put these resources to use, and the Woodcraft program emerged from utilitarian beginnings as an early cabinetry program. The Woodcraft shop provided tables, chairs, and other furniture needs for College facilities. Since the early 20th century the Woodcraft program has produced wooden puzzles and games, baskets, seagrass stools, candleholders, and furniture. Woodcraft design at Berea College features Appalachian, Shaker and Colonial American styles. In its infancy the program was heavily influenced by famed furniture collector and author, Wallace M. Nutting, whose collection remains on display today at the Log House Craft Gallery.

ABOUT OUR WOODCRAFT PRODUCTS

Our Woodcraft products are made exclusively from Kentucky hardwoods including cherry, walnut, maple, and poplar. The wood we used is harvested responsibly with careful concern for management of soil and water resources. Our use of local wood not only minimizes detrimental impact to the environment, but also reduces transportation costs and stimulates local economies in eastern Kentucky. Each of our Woodcraft pieces are handcrafted and finished by several applications of hand-rubbed lacquer or pure mineral oil, which require hand-sanding between each coat.
