Cell Safe by MDX Industries

For sea kayakers who carry along a cell phone and need waterproof protection for it, MDX Industries Inc. has
created the Cell Safe. The Cell Safe is a cylindrical case constructed of durable ABS plastic. At 8.2" high
by 2.95" in diameter and weighing 6.4 ounces, the case is about the size of a bicycle-style water bottle.
An "O" ring seal makes the Cell Safe waterproof, and it is clamped tight by two plastic clips with a stainless steel
hinge pin. The shell itself is shock absorbent, and the interior is fitted with reticulated mesh foam that does not
absorb water. Should you accidentally drop it in the drink, Cell Safe will float (provided that its contents weigh
less than 1.5 pounds).
While the Cell Safe's instructions note that it is not intended for prolonged submersion, I tested the case by
loading it with that valuable trip commodity: toilet paper. I then plunged the Cell Safe into one meter deep
water and held it under for five minutes. I was surprised to find that the T.P. was still dry. The Cell Safe
also survived the Drag Test: I filled the case with paper towels, fixed a line to the case at the built in loop,
and tied the end to a sailboat. I sailed along with the case in tow for a good twenty minutes. When I popped
the case open the towels were bone dry.
However, the big clincher is that during a leisurely afternoon paddle, you can hear your cell phone ring. This
is critical for catching that call inviting you to an evening oyster fest.
Given that the Cell Safe offers rugged, waterproof and buoyant protection for a cell phone or other valuable,
useful items at $24.95, I would not e surprised to see it popping up on more kayaks.
