Conrads The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, long recognized for its French nineteenth-century paintings, also has a distinctive collection of American pictures of the same period. Perhaps more than the European paintings, the American collection focuses on Sterling and Francine Clark’s individual favorites rather than late-nineteenth-century painting in general. Great suites of paintings by Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent, whom Sterling Clark once referred to as “the two best American artists,” form the core of the American collection, which also includes paintings by George Inness, Mary Cassatt, and Frederic Remington. The rest of the collection almost entirely comprises the intimately scaled genre and landscape pictures of which the Clarks were so fond.
