Oil Pan Leak, Q/A

Question: Does anyone have any advice for me? I will be installing my second oil pan gasket in one year. The original one leaked like a sib, so i replaced it. Guess what, I still am cleaning oil spots off of the driveway. It is coming from the front and rear of the pan where the pan forms a "u" around the crank. I used a cork/rubber gasket from toyota, and also the gasket in a tube for high temps. Would putting the gasket on the engine instead of the pan help? This way I could make sure the half-round gasket is seated in the groove. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you deal with it? Let me know...

Thanks,

Raymond

Answer: Raymond, I bought a used '82 FJ60 a couple of years ago with the same problem, even though the previous owner had the oil pan gasket replaced. When removing the old gasket, I found that the previous replacement was not done well. All of the old cork gasket material had not been removed from the very uppermost inside corners of the "U". I was careful to remove every trace of the old gasket(s), and it hasn't leaked since. It takes extra time (I used an old dental pick) but in the long run it's well worth it.

Answer: Raymond, As the gasket gets older it shrinks, try to tighten the bolts before you take them down again. Also, your real main seal could be leaking if the oil is coming out of your clutch cover inspection hole.

Answer: Raymond, I replaced the oil pan gasket on my 78 2F 18 months ago. It hasn't leaked since. I used the blade from a mini plane to scrape all the gasket material off. It's important that you do not mar the surface when cleaning off the old gasket and all gasket material is removed. The corners are a pain to take care of. When installing the new gasket, I did not use any gasket compound, but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt. There may be a specially formulated compound for the cork gaskets, so make sure you have the correct type. I don't see any reason you should be having any leaks unless there's a kink in the gasket, incorrect torque of the oil pan bolts or a leak coming from another location (i.e. rear main).
