Top Dead Center

The question has often come up here about what is Top Dead Center and what mark is what on the flywheel.

There are two marks on the flywheel, a line which is TDC for #1, and a BB or hemisphere which is tacked on near the line. This BB is 7° BTDC, which is used for setting nominal ignition advance with a timing light.

The line is about imposssible to see on an engine that's running, and in fact is often hard to see just turning the crank by hand. The BB is often mistaken for TDC, but it isn't. You need to use the line for setting things like valve adjustment, distributor rotation on install, cam and crank timing gears.

The photo above is from a 1976 flywheel from a 2F, but is subtantially similar to an F flywheel. You can see the line and the BB near 7:00 at lower left. The Toyota Part Number is stamped at the top.

I hope this helps illustrate what I've been talking about all these years....

Happy Cruisin'!
