1) School Starter and Alternative History Courses Start September 15; Interesting Coincidence
It is perhaps a significant coincidence that September 15th is International Freedom in Education Day, with events schedules around the world. See http://jipli.free.fr This is the second annual event. It looks like we need to schedule some in the United States.

It is also the day that the AERO online courses, School Starters 101 and the History and Theory of Alternative Education start!

The two AERO courses are starting in just a few days! There are some terrific people in both courses, from a wide variety of backgrounds. What they have in common is a profound interest in understanding and creating learner-centered educational alternatives. We still have some openings, and we make it a point to help people financially wherever possible. If you have wanted to truly understand the roots and historical underpinnings of these approaches, you must take the History and Theory of Educational Alternatives course, led by Dr. Ron Miller. And if you have a vision of starting a revolutionary school or program which empowers its teachers and students, this is your chance to make that happen.

2) NYC Area Democratic Schools Open
There are now several alternative and democratic schools in the New York City Area. AERO has been helping these schools to come into existence.

Of course, Brooklyn Free School opened four years ago and is thriving, with many students on its waiting list www.brooklynfreeschool.org

Inspired by AERO and BFS, several other area schools have opened. Some have taken AERO’s School Starters Course.

Three years ago Voyagers Community School started in Farmindale, New Jersey. See www.voyagerskids.com

Two years ago Wellspring Community School opened in Gladstone, NJ. www.thewellspringschool.org

Last year Teddy McArdle Free School started in Little Falls, NJ www.tmcafs.org Their school starts September 15th.

This year two more are opening! Manhattan Free School just opened this week in the East Village of Manhattan Manhattanfreeschool.org ! This is the first democratic school in Manhattan in decades!

And Emerson Lilly Free School is opening in Andover, NJ. www.emersonlilyfreeschool.org

All of the latter schools have student openings. Contact them before they begin to grow waiting lists like Brooklyn Free School and others.

3) A Couple of New AERO DVDs
We now have a two disk, 3 1/2 hour DVD of the recent International Democratic Education Conference in Vancouver, Canada. It is only lightly edited, sort of reality IDEC, with excerpts from most of the keynotes and a lot of background. We have the conference organizers will be releasing the keynotes soon.

We’re selling the two DVDs for a total of just $24 for those interested.

Another similar two DVD gem is a wonderful example of a democratic meeting held by public school students who are members of our democratic table tennis club at the local Boys and Girls Club. The significance of this video is that it shows that regular public school kids can easily accept and learn how to run democratic meeting as a means of making important decisions.
