What causes sports related injuries

Most common sports injuries are caused by factors we may sometimes ignore. (Before participating in physical activity you should always remember to consult with your physician).  Always wear the appropriate protective gear and abide by the rules of the sport. Remember to always warm up by doing some gentle stretching exercises. Finally be careful not to overexert your body during competition.

Most injuries can be categorized into two groups - acute injuries and overuse injuries. Both injuries may include damage to the soft tissues (muscles and ligaments) and bones.

Acute injuries are a result of sudden trauma to the body. Some common injuries include:

  • contusions (bruises)
  • strains (a partial or complete tear of a tendon or muscle)
  • fractures

Overuse injuries involve a series of smaller injuries that can cause minor fractures, muscle tears, or progressive bone deformities. Other overuse injuries involve the heel and the knee, usually at the joints where the tendons attach to the bone.
