Although the tea cozy (also spelled "cosy") is rumored to have been invented in several countries, the most popular legend comes from Ireland in the 1600s. During dinner one night, a farmer leaned across his table and his hat fell off landing directly on his teapot. Later he removed the hat to pour more tea and realized the hat had kept the tea warm. His wife made the first official teapot cover and called it a "cosy".

Tea cozies have become popular in the world of fiction with the 1997 book The Haunted Tea-Cosy: A Dispirited and Distasteful Diversion for Christmas by Edward Gorey. This humorous spinoff of Charles Dickens' famous work A Christmas Carol is great for a laugh.

Tea cozies made another appearance in comedy when comedian Bill Connolly cracked the joke "Never trust a man who, when left alone with a tea cosy, doesn't try it on!" His joke refers to the British-style hand-knitted cozies that resemble woolen hats.
