These beautiful and classic planter boxes are built with traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints and floating panel sides.
This joinery is used not only to make the planter boxes strong and attractive, but it's the best way to join wood that will be outdoors and always getting wet.
As you can see in the photos, you can build several variations of the planter box design. The basic plan is for the small cube-like planter box. It's 18-5/8" wide x 18-5/8" deep x 19-1/2" high. But you can also make a long or high version planter box. Details are included in the plans.
Another handy feature of these planter boxes is the adjustable bottom, which can be raised or lowered to fit the height of the potted plants in the planter box. We used redwood to build our planter boxes because it's a beautiful wood that stands up to weather and moisture well. Other good choices for building a planter box would be cedar and painted pine or pressure-treated pine.
