Artist: David Johnson
The official song of Carnival is titled "If Ever I Cease to Love". The song was a favorite of Russian Grad Duke Alexis Romnoff, whose visit to New Orleans in 1872 inspired the first Rex parade. The Duke was much taken with burlesque star Lydia Thompson, who performed the song, and their legendary romance was well-chronicled in newspapers of the day. More than 100 years later, the song remains the very heartbeat of Mardi Gras. Artist, David Johnson chose the song as his inspiration and illustrated many of the lyrics within his 1995 Mardi Gras print.
