The Goddess Durga is the compassionate form of the Mother. Durga in Sanskrit means "invincible" and is often seen riding a tiger or lion, weilding many weapons to protect her children from others and from their own ego. It is said that she is another form of Uma or Parvati, the wife of the great Lord Shiva and that she was manifested by the gods themselves, from Shiva came her face, from Ram her hair and so on. The worship of Durga has been popular since ancient times, and in the scriptures she is mentioned by 108 names, and thus she is all forms of the Divine Mother, or the Divine Mother herself.
The Durga statue (shown above left) is the main Durga mother on Kashi Ashram.
