Tech Update:
Rev-Share Fields -- New on the Order Page

In response to your feedback, we have implemented a new order page feature that records and displays Yahoo! Network revenue share status and URL. The "Rev-Share URL" field shows the web address of the page that your customer was visiting immediately prior to entering your Yahoo! Store (on their initial visit within the last 30 days). If the URL of this page contains yahoo.com, but not mail.yahoo.com or store.yahoo.com, the Rev-Share URL field will display the Yahoo! Network URL and the "Network Order" field will be marked "Yes." This "Yes" means you will be charged a 3.5% network revenue share on this order. If the URL does not contain yahoo.com (or contains mail.yahoo.com, store.yahoo.com, or is not available), you will see the URL of origin or "N/A" (not available) displayed in the Rev-Share URL field. The Network Order field will read "No." In this case, the order is not subject to a 3.5% network revenue share.

Sometimes the Rev-Share URL is very long -- so we've had to truncate it to display a maximum of 128 characters. In most cases, the URL displayed will link you to a live web page on Yahoo! or elsewhere on the Internet. However, in some instances, the truncated, underlying link will no longer work. You will have at least 128 characters with information about your customer's point of origin.

Please note: The new Rev-Share URL will only be displayed for orders after April 16, 2002.

What's Working for You:
Sold on Cross-Sell

Increase order size and revenue -- use the Cross-Sell feature to show shoppers related items at checkout time. Click the "Cross-Sell" link under the Promote column within your Store Manager to get started.

The Cross-Sell feature launched last month, and so far, it's been a big hit. Here's a sampling of the feedback we've received:

Sally Taylor, at The Cowboy Life, writes:

Thank you so much for implementing a better, easier cross-selling method! I have so many items in my store, and handling the cross-selling through your old system was a pain -- now that I can enter all my cross-sells using Excel, it's a snap!

Ted Toledano, from Brandsmall.com and Great-Web-Promos.com, adds:

This feature has clearly enabled us to intelligently create a parent-child product combination, which not only increases order size and profit, but most importantly, customer satisfaction. Undoubtedly, the strength of this feature is the "one-click" ability to directly add the item to cart -- it is the main reason behind the increase in cross-sell items. Good job!

Store Building Tip:
Gift Wrap Is Always in Season

Take a moment now to set up a gift-wrap option in your store, just in time for June gift-giving to dads, grads, brides, and grooms. (And, don't forget to set a reasonable price to cover your costs.). Here's how to offer gift wrap:

  1. Log into the Store Manager.
  2. Under Order Settings, click on "Order Form."
  3. Scroll down to the section called "Gift Options."
  4. Select "Yes" in the box next to Gift Wrap to configure this option.
  5. Type a price in the "Price" field and select "Per Order" or "Per Item." Use Per Order to charge a set amount to wrap every item in the entire order. Per Item will charge the amount you set to each item in the order.
  6. You can activate the "Gift Message" field. This creates a field where your customer can type a personal message to accompany the gift. If you create this field, be sure to print and deliver the gift message with the gift!
  7. Hit "Done" when you're finished.
  8. Push your changes live by clicking "Publish Order Settings" at the bottom of "Order Settings" on the Store Manager page.

Your gift-wrap feature is ready to go. Make sure you have a good supply of paper, tape, scissors, and ribbon for special occasions.

Debunking Search Engine Marketing Myths

Paul Bruemmer examines commonly held misconceptions about web marketing and site optimization for search. In the process of marketing his company's search engine optimization services, Bruemmer also provides strategic advice for promoting your web business.

Here are a few relevant ideas: Search engine submission software cannot keep up with changing submission guidelines and search engine updates. A search-savvy human will get better results than a one-size-fits-all program. An optimized web site does generate targeted leads and sales effectively. Never believe promises or guarantees of top-rankings -- search engine results are dynamic and unpredictable. You must stay vigilant even after you've achieved a good ranking. Your positioning in search results will change as search software and competing web sites refine their strategies and as you add products and edit your web pages.

Traffick.com offers insightful coverage of portals, search engines, Internet marketing, and related topics.
