In 1967, Pontiac unleashed their pony car. Named at first Banshee, it was soon changed to Firebird (since Banshee, the mystical Irish creature, symbolized death). As a last-minute offering, Pontiac teamed up with Chevrolet and the first Firebird was based on the Camaro, which explains why you will find many of the parts used on the 1967 Camaro on the Firebird. Call it a Camaro with a Pontiac heart. And it was the heart of this model that pulled it ahead of other pony cars, for beating under the hood was the same powerplant that powered the legendary GTO.
