U.S. Fish Oil Market Snares $60 Million: Supplement buyers are biting, but suppliers eye the food market.
There’s something fishy happening in the nutrition industry. Sales of fish oil are rising amid growing public awareness of health benefits provided by long-chain, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAS). Moreover, demand for fish oil supplements will likely build if the FDA approves a proposed labeling health claim linking long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, notably docoahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaneoic acid (EPA), to cardiovascular benefits.
But supplement sales may represent only a few drops in a sea of marketing potential. Now, suppliers of fish oils rich in DHA and EPA are fishing for ways to incorporate fish oils into foods—and some are tantalizingly close to reeling in major food manufacturers as clients.
How large is the market for fish oils? Globally, xx% of fish oils are sold as nutritional supplements, with the remaining xx% sold as food ingredients.
