Historic Organs of North Carolina All three of the splendid organs in the Chapel at Duke University, representing the best of international organbuilding in the 20th century, as well as the rare examples of 18th-century organs in the musically rich Moravian culture of Old Salem, grace this tour of organs large and small, including a few in Virginia and the unique E. M. Skinner at Biltmore. The huge Aeolian organ at Duke could not be more compelling as Ken Cowan plays it, and Mark Brombaugh’s presentation of the magnum opus Flentrop at the other end of the chapel simply glows. Meg Irwin-Brandon plays the John Brombaugh “Italian” organ in the side chapel. In all, 28 organs in North Carolina (a few in Virginia, actually) are heard as played by 30 organists in 61 selections of music, with four hymns sung by OHS members.
