Whether it’s his posters for Golden Gate National Parks or his illustrations for Sunset Books’ California Wine Country, a selection of which have been reproduced here, Schwab reveals the soul of his beloved state through the judicious use of silhouette, color, and scale. “California is my muse,” he says, “just as it was for many of the graphic artists and painters around the turn of the last century. Inspiration is everywhere—the redwoods, the lakes, the mountains, the vineyards. And the people—the winemakers, the organic farmers and ranchers, the artists and designers—there are so many heroes in California. Everyone inspires everyone else. I try to create images that are strong, but discreet in their power; dramatic, without giving too much away; romantic in their message.”
