5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is the immediate precursor to serotonin. The amino acid L-tyrptophan, found in foods such as milk, chicken, turkey and bananas, is converted to 5-HTP before being converted to serotonin.
Uses:
Low levels of serotonin have been associated with:

Using 5-HTP for weight loss:
Some physicians are combining 5-HTP with appetite suppressants such as phentermine (Ionamin or Fastin) or diethylpropion (Tenuate) sometimes also including serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac (fluoxetine), Zoloft (sertraline) or Celexa (citalopram).
