Introduction:
- Meekness is not a valued character trait in contemporary American society.
- Illustration: During his election campaign, George H.W. Bush was ridiculed for saying he would make America a "kinder and gentler nation."
- Meekness was not valued by the Israelites of Jesus' day, who were looking for a conquering Messiah to free them from Roman rule.
- Jesus said, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth."
Christians are called to be meek.
- Meekness is not a synonym for weakness; it refers to placing your power and ability under the control of your master.
- Illustration: The Greek word translated meekness was used in terms of taming a wild horse.
- Meekness is first of an attitude of humility and submission to God.
- Our submission to God should then change how we interact with others.
- Illustration: TA story about George Washington Carver demonstrates his meekness in the face of another person's ignorance.
Our level of inner-meekness is displayed by our actions.
- Those we are meek will turn to the Lord—will yield to him, trust him, and depend on him, and can rest after committing their lives to him.
- Psalm 37:1-11 - Illustration: The Bible refers to Moses as the meekest man who ever lived (Numbers 12:3).
- Those who are meek will submit and conform their lives to God's word (James 1:21).
- Those who are meek will seek to restore other Christians who stumble (Galatians 6:1).
- Those who are meek will not seek revenge when they are wronged.
- Illustration: A humorous story about a truck-driver who is confronted by a group of bikers
Meekness comes with a blessing.
- Jesus says that the meek will "inherit the Earth" (Mathew 5:5); this statement is not referring to worldly riches, wealth, or power.
- Those who are meek will inherit the promises of God's heavenly kingdom.
- Those who are meek will experience contentment on Earth.
- We must die to ourselves before we can inherit these blessings.
