• Illustration: A woman once described to DelBene a time when her husband was in the hospital. She saw a bright light, assumed it was death coming for him, and told the light she was not ready to give him up. He recovered, but she had a hard time believing what had happened.
• We're often fearful of things outside our experience, and we don't attribute them to God normally.
• There is a difference between "I don't believe it" to "I don't believe it."

• Illustration: A man is beaten by his father, but he hears Jesus tell him, "I am here with you." He had difficulty believing this really happened.
• There is a small but significant leap from "I don't believe it" to "I don't believe it." It's a step from unbelief to awe.
• Illustration: A young mother sees a Coke billboard, and feels the presence of Jesus in a profound way, recognizing that he is the real thing.
• Illustration: A runner named Douglas was struggling with a work problem, but during a run, he sensed God's presence and his ideas fell into place.
• God pulls people to the margins, beyond their normal experience.
• Illustration: DelBene was walking in the snow once, ondering about his life, when he heard a voice saying, "Take my hand. I know the way."
• God continues to break through in these ways, to take us to the margins.
