by Leighton Ford
Text: John 14:2
Topic: Why heaven in the future is important to us today.
Big Idea: Heaven, the home of every heart's desire, is open only to those who answer God's call to salvation through Jesus Christ.
Keywords: Eternity; Heaven; Hope; Salvation
Introduction
- Most of us have a deep longing to be home, both physically and spiritually.
What is heaven?
- The Bible tells us it's a place (John 14:2), though not contained in time and space.
Four reasons to believe in heaven:
- Jesus taught it: "I go to prepare a place for you."
- Our hearts call for it: Solomon said God has put "eternity in our hearts."
- Science doesn't rule it out: Going there is just a matter of "changing frequencies."
- Christ's resurrection confirms it: "Because I live, you shall live also."
Heaven is our eternal address.
- God is saying today, "Come home where you belong."
- The most important step to take is to walk to the cross and start the way home.
What's heaven like?
- "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived" (1 Cor. 2:9).
- Three things God has revealed about heaven:
- There will be no more death, crying or pain (Rev. 21:4).
- There will be a community of love.
- There will be dynamic activity as we serve God for eternity.
- The Bible says we will see God in heaven, and we will worship him.
How do we get to heaven?
- We must understand that there's a heaven and a hell; both are prepared places.
- Jesus says, "He who has the son has life." We have to know Christ.
- It's not what we do; it's what Christ has done for us on the cross.
Conclusion
- Eternal life begins not when you die but when Christ comes to live within you.
