A Mother’s Faith
by Steve May
Text: John 2:1-11
Topic: How mothers can impact their children’s lives
Big Idea: A son or daughter never stops needing a mother.
Keywords: Children; Motherhood; Mothers; Parenting;

Introduction:
  • Illustration: To open this Mother’s Day sermon, May tells several humorous stories of other pastor’s foibles in their attempts to honor mothers on Mother’s Day.
  • Moms fill a place in our lives that no one else can fill.
  • Illustration: May gives two hypothetical illustrations of families when mom is away to demonstrate how vital moms are to our lives and how much we expect of them.
  • In the Gospel of John we see that Mary played a vital role in the life of Jesus throughout his ministry...and she remained with him till the very end.
  • John 2:1-11
Be involved in your child’s life.
  • Illustration: To illustrate how we too quickly dismiss the importance of family, May quotes comedian George Burns: “Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family...in another city!”
  • The closer we remain to our parents or our children, even in adult years, the better off we’ll all be.
  • More than anyone else in the world, moms can brighten their children’s day, just by being a pleasant presence in their life.
  • Illustration: May illustrates the opposite of a relationship-nurturing mother by telling a joke about mother who guilted her son into calling her regularly.
  • We should follow the example of Jesus in this story, and always speak to our mothers with words of honor.
Be aware of your child’s potential.
  • Illustration: May gives an two examples—one from personal experience, one from TV’s Seinfeld—of mothers, the first who is blind to her son’s ability, the second who gushes her son’s praise.
  • John 2:11
  • Mary saw Jesus’ potential before anyone else did.
  • Illustration: To illustrate how a mother’s belief in her son can affect a son’s life, May tells the story of Wendell Burton, a musician whose mother insisted that his work was good enough to show to a famous friend of hers, prompting Wendell to say, “Only a mother would assume that Bob Dylan and I are on the same level as song-writers.”.
Be willing to let your child do things themselves.
  • Every parent must learn when to step back and allow their child to make his or her own decisions.
  • Illustration: May gives three brief, personal examples of parents who haven’t yet found how to let their children be fully independent yet.
  • Recognize their responsibility to make their own decisions.
Conclusion:
  • Big Idea: A son or daughter never stops needing a mother.
  • Illustration: May quotes Mordkhe Gebertig: “A child who has all his teeth still needs his mother to sing him to sleep.”
