Shipping sand is very expensive because it is very heavy. You can minimize the cost of shipping sand by purchasing it locally or by ordering sand cooperatively.

1) Buying sand locally saves money. Most localities do not provide a source of fine, white playsand suitable for sandboxes. Safe Sand Company provides a fine grade sand, similar in texture to salt or sugar. This texture of sand molds when wet into sand castles and shapes. However, there is an alternative. Pea gravel is often sold as playsand as low as $5 per 50 pound bag. Pea gravel is a coarser, browner material consisting of small smooth rocks. Check that it is washed and dust free. Pea gravel does not lend itself to sand castles because it does not mold when wet. However, it is great fun with construction trucks, shovels and pails.

2) Purchasing cooperatively saves on shipping. If you are determined to have fine, white playsand rather than pea gravel, there are other options. Ask for donations or form a cooperative in your area. Schools and communities work together to chip in for sand. Visit: Amazon Honor System to make a donation to a school or organization. Buying sand as a cooperative saves on shipping. Other parents, childcare centers or schools in your area may be interested in sharing a larger order to save on shipping.
