Authentic Native American Indian Drums

These are authentic, stretched hide, ceremonial, Indian drums made by the Tarahumara Indians for use during the Holy Week Festival.

From deep in the Sierra Madre Mountains, these Indian drums are used during ceremonies as a call to gather the people. During the festival you can hear the rich sound of the drums drifting throughout the mountain villages for miles.

Fashioned by hand, a piece of native yellow pine is shaved until it is thin enough to be bent into the shape of the drum. Goat skin is stretched over both sides of the drum ring and laced around the edges with real raw hide. It has a small raw hide handle which is ideal for hanging.

These Tarahumara “aro” drums are great conversation pieces and reflect the unique history of the Tarahumara people. They call them aro drums. The word "aro" in Spanish means ring. The wood is bent into a ring to form the drum.

The larger the drum the richer the sound when played. Not just for playing these Tarahumara Indian drums make great wall hangings, or can be used as table or shelf decorations. Some customers tell us that these drums make a great canvas for art projects. Others have fashioned the larger drums into tables that are rich with history and character.

Fashioned by hand, using an axe, a piece of native yellow pine is shaved to less than a half inch in thickness in order to be bent into the shape of the drum ring. Real rawhide skin is stretched over both sides of the ring and laced around the edges with raw hide lace. It has a small raw hide handle on the side. This drum is a unique and historical conversation piece that looks great and is full of rustic charm. As well as an instrument, people use these drums as wall decorations, rustic table tops etc. If you or someone you know is artistic, these drums also make great backgrounds for art projects.
