 | My Crash Hi! I have been reading your site, I found the crashing page and thought I
would sent mine in.
I was riding this area with a few jumps about 10km from home, there was
this one jump, not all that big, with a landing ramp. I went over it and
landed it fine, then I went faster and over shot the landing ramp my
instincts told me to let the rear hit the ground first and use the forks
to soak up most of the force, the theory was fine. When I done this my
right arm broke due to such a massive landing (both bones in my arm) and I
put all my pressure on the left which sent me off balance and I came off.
I got up and looked at my wrist, this was rather bent, I just thought I
had dislocated it (I had as well as breaking both bones) So I rode my way
home (Yes all 10km) and got a ride to the hospital. The doctors looked at
it and said it was really bad, I just looked at it and said it doesn't
hurt though... At this stage the swelling was bad and my arm was literally
a banana!
What came of that was surgery to insert a metal plate to hold my bones
together while they healed, this will stay in for life and a massive 14
stitch scar right where people slit their wrists (thankfully this is
running down my arm and not across!). I am just glad I am able to continue
riding, though my arm is still a little weak and recovering. All this
happened on 21st of November.
The best thing I could have done to avoid this would have been to slowly
go faster over the jump instead of doubling my speed on the second run.
That is my worst crash.
Thanks
David

| | | Over the Handlebars!! here's some pics of my recent endo...my fiance was taking the pics and kept
on clicking till my body came to a stop at the bottom...what a
woman...lol...the crash knocked the wind out of me as i came to rest in
pretzel form...other than that...no injuries except pride...after we got
home we analyzed what may have happened...we are thinking i had too much
rebound on rear shock which after my rear hit launched me forward and in a
panic i hit the brakes...mostly the front by the looks of it...lol....it was
very unexpected as we have both cleared that small section many times
before...proper padding played a big roll in coming out with no
injuries...good helmet, elbow pads, shin/knee pads, and a good set of
gloves...and of course i dove right into my patented ninja roll to brace the
fall
thanks

| | | Don't Wreck!!! A couple of weeks ago i was riding my bike at a local playground doing tricks down slides, over ramps, and whatever was jumpable. I saw this rock at the beginning of some woods and i decided to jump off it. The rock was about 4 to 5 feet high and the landing area wasn't so smooth, it had rocks, small trees, and a boulder that i thought i could clear. A friend and i cleared the landing area of logs and rocks that could hurt, but the boulder was still there. It wasn't sticking out of the ground much, but we couldn't move it. I pulled my bike up a long wide slide that was about 25 feet long. I went down it as fast as i could thinking about that boulder and just having to make it over. My friends were all at the rock ledge getting ready for me to jump. I came up to the ramp very fast and still thinking about that rock. As my front wheel went off my back wheel clipped the edge of the ledge and i flipped forwards. The boulder that i was trying to miss hit me in the head with me going around 25-30 mph. I continued on with tumbling down into the woods. When i stopped tumbling my friends came rushing over to me to see what happened. No one knew how bad it was. They asked me if i knew where i was and what happened and i had no clue. The filled me in and called my mom to come pick me up and take me to the all too familiar hospital. While we were waiting i kept forgeting what they told me and asked the same questions over and over again. In the end, after going to the hospital, I ended up with a very bad concussion, and a hole going all the way through my upper lip. Luckily i wore a helmet which saved my life, without it my skull would have cracked or even worse. The reason i flipped was because of my back wheel hitting the ledge. If i would have pulled up sooner and let my rear wheel follow i would have been fine. Even though i was wearing a helmet a full face helmet would have left me with no scars, just a headache. I probably shouldn't have tried the jump in the first place. The take off was rough and the landing area was horrible. If you do not have the skill level don't attempt the jump.

| | | Rockin' Out My favorite crash... i was riding in one of the local parks, it was amazing out, 90 degrees, dry and sunny, I went up to one of my favorite rock gardens planning on doing some extra technical singletrack, and since i was super sweaty i took me helmet off, i speed around a corner, pulled a couple of usual small, 1 foot drops, and at the end there was a clipper (jump that catches the rear tire), usually i would clear it, but at my speed, i couldn't fugure out which way to go, I hit it dead center, and it threw me into a 6 foot flight, my body tilted, and i hit the rock slab with a thud,
But between this, i remeber being able to think it through clearly, I thought to myself "this is gunna suck, can i clip out? no. ohh wait my helmets off...dam, should i brace myself...?" and then i felt the rock slab with an extra hollow thud. The bike bounced and curved wildly, smashing my rib, leaving a gash on my hib, cut open knee, and a welt on my head, the best part of the crash was i was 5 miles from the trail head, and it was a no holds downhill

| | | My Crash ok so you wanna know about people's crashes. well i can tell you of my
lamest but most fatal crash i've had. So anyway heres how it went, I was
riding down one of my local roads about a year ago and i was going about 25
mph and i wanted to speed up. So i decided to try a new leaning technique to
get more force onto the pedals. Well what happened was i was leaning to far
and my front tire turned and I flew about 10 feet. I had to turn midair
because i wasnt wearing gloves, so I ended up landing on my left forearm and
left side. When I landed I had the air knocked out of me, even worse I wasnt
wearing my helmet ( dont ever do that!) so i ended up yelling for help.
Luckily i was next to a house and they called the ambulance and fire
department, and i was takin to the hospital. i still have the scar but my
injury went all the way down my left arm, the thing that really saved me was
my leather belt. I recomend wearing a leather belt if your a street rider,
it may not seem like much but it will definitely protect your sides to an
extent. Also wear really tough clothing, jeans, sweatshirts, etc. that can
edfinitely save you in a crash.

| | | Slow Motion Having ridden mtb's for over 20 years, I have had my share of crashes !@#$% However, I have never had a serious injury - but many scratches, cuts, scrapes, and bruises seem to be unavoidable!! ONE thing I have noticed is that while in a "crash situation" is that time slows WAAAAAY down and everything happens in "slow motion" - this is a good thing. I feel like I am in control even while wiping out and able to come off the bike usually landing on all fours or just jumping off - and have plenty of time to figure out landing spot and postion. HOWEVER, there is one exception worth noting - and that is when you have an extremely sudden event and you are caught completely off guard - such as when a stick pops up and wedges in your front wheel spokes and hits the fork tube and the bike STOPS!!! or when an unseen gopher hole craters you out. Even these, however, can be somewhat expected in certain terrain and conditions - so I am always alert to these imminent trail dangers and ride defensively and expect the unexpected just like driving on the road....stan aka the MaNiMaL
