padThe Power of Forgiveness

Commentary to Natural Great Peace 7

Why should we refrain from harm? Whereas it can take only a moment for someone to hurt us, we can maintain the anger sparked by that single action for the rest of our life, creating a mental anguish completely out of proportion with its cause. Alternatively, we could react by seeing the damage someone causes themselves by acting out of ignorance or passion, and forgive them.

The act of forgiveness is at the heart of the practice of compassion and is an incredible source of positive karma. When we practice, it is our own mind that becomes filled with love and compassion, and we receive that benefit. The same argument applies when we get angry with ourselves. We have to care for ourselves, to be our own friend, so why not respond with love?

This is why it is so important to tame our minds. Mind is the ground from which all thoughts and emotions emerge. Through practicing mindfulness and discipline, we can eliminate our bad habits, and gradually become a better person. When we work with ourselves in this way we become able to do the most meaningful thing we could possibly do -- help other people and bring happiness to the world around us.
